When current abuse is disclosed to a pastor, ministry leader, or counselor, all kinds of ethical and legal implications ensue. In addition, the helper needs to understand his or her role and how to best engage with both the victim and the community surrounding him or her. This course will focus on practical ways to create safety and provide a plan of care to victims of current abuse.

Participants will learn:

  • How to compassionately receive the story of a current victim of abuse
  • How and when to involve law enforcement and/or Child Protective Services
  • How to design a plan of care for the victim and her dependents
  • How to engage with the church in surrounding a victim of abuse

Presenters

Greg Wilson, D.Ed.Min, LPC-S

Greg Wilson, D.Ed.Min., LPC Supervisor, is a Licensed Professional Counselor and counselor supervisor, and leads Soul Care Associates, a counseling and consulting practice in Texas. He specializes in counseling adolescents, men, couples, and families through issues such as depression, anxiety, abuse, addictions, trauma, and relational conflict. He also consults with leaders of churches and other organizations on adopting best practices for care.

Beth Broom, LPC-S, CCTP-II

Beth Broom is a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor (LPC-S) and Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, Level 2 (CCTP-II). She owns a private counseling practice specializing in trauma healing. She also serves as a Deacon of Care at The Village Church Denton in Denton, Texas. Beth is the founder and director of Christian Trauma Healing Network, and she co-hosts a podcast called “Counsel for Life,” engaging conversations about mental health and the Christian life.

Christian Trauma Healing Network has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 7313. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. Christian Trauma Healing Network is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs. This program qualifies for three and a half hours of CE hours for those who complete the course in full.
